FinOps attribution and cost events

These platform-admin workspaces govern business metadata and inspect costs beyond model requests. Platform-admin viewers have read-only access.

Open the pages and understand scope

Under the sidebar's Cost management group, select FinOps Attribution or Cost Events, or open /finops/attribution and /finops/cost-events. ADMIN users can manage dimensions, assignments, and policies. ADMIN_VIEWER users can inspect platform-wide configuration and events without mutation. Other roles cannot open these workspaces.

FinOps attribution

/finops/attribution manages:

  • governed dimensions and hierarchical dimension values
  • effective-dated assignments to organizations, teams, applications, virtual keys, users, customers, cost centers, and agents
  • required-metadata policies scoped by organization, application, and environment

A required-metadata policy can reject unattributed requests or allow and flag them. Resolved values are persisted in each spend record's dimension snapshot, so later assignment changes do not rewrite historical evidence.

Custom governed dimensions are visible here and in stored snapshots. The current FinOps Analytics Attribution view (Attribute by) uses its fixed built-in dimensions; it does not dynamically add every custom dimension.

Cost-event explorer

/finops/cost-events lists model, embedding, image, audio, tool, external API, compute, storage, network, and adjustment events. Filter by event type, source, organization, environment, agent, tool, cost center, request ID, or date.

Each event shows provider and billed cost, metering quantity, recorded scope, agent/run and tool IDs, cost center, and the dimension snapshot. Totals remain separate by currency. The list displays up to the 200 most recent matching events, so narrow the filters when investigating older data.

Use a request ID to correlate an event with Request Logs. Use FinOps Analytics for request-level trends and built-in attribution groups.

Together, the pages answer two different questions: Attribution defines the business metadata that should be attached; Cost Events proves what metadata and cost were actually recorded. See FinOps relationship and data flow.
